On monday the tramies trialled a tram with a pantograph instead of the
trolly poles, this was done after various overhead works at Gardiner tramway
crossing, i believe the reason for this could be because of:
1.    considerable arching to insulators
2.    trolly poles consistantly come off contact wire
these are my theories only as this is what i have seen to be common.
