Radio Scanners???

Does anyone have any suggestions for a good radio scanner for typical
train-buff activity?

I am in Canada at the present, and want to get set up with one here for use,
and also for when back home late in the year in Oz.

I haven't done a bit of research yet, but thought I might see if I get a
favourable reply here first (the lazy way!!).

Any recommendations?
